Conrad Cummings --
Chief Wrangler...

While most cowgirls are still working through the 12-step recovery program from the knock-out list of gold titles tearing their way out of the HC studio, Conrad Cummings, Vice President and Chief Wrangler of Hyperspace Cowgirls, looks surprisingly serene. With the help of Conrad's experience in the multimedia industry and a whirlwind of production schedules under his belt, his red hair remains neat, his blue shirt well pressed, and his spirit calm.
And at brief times of repose, Conrad—a noted artist, teacher, and pioneer in the music world—can be prone to light contemplation on past accomplishments and present successes.

"It's all multimedia once you go beyond a piece of music played by an orchestra." Although he is an accomplished composer, Cummings prefers the excitement and dynamism of a full fledged production. "Once there's a stage with costumes, sets, actors, and lights you are honing many facets into a singular creation. Interactive media is no different."

Before Hyperspace Cowgirls, Conrad's musical pursuits always pushed towards the cutting edges of various media. A list of his accomplishments reads like points on a rising trajectory toward multimedia glory: Research fellow in Paris' IRCAM project developing computer models of the singing voice, director of Oberlin College's music and new media program (in the 80's, before new media was hip), composer and producer of three major American operas: the "absolutely, ferociously neo-Baroque" Eros and Psyche 1983, La Mama's Photo-Op 1992, and the Vietnam War elegy Tonkin 1993. In the span of his career, Cummings maintained a focus on synthesized music well before its popular ubiquity. He watched "the life span of this electronic technology move from an academic, secretive venture to part of our everyday fabric."

Cummings brought his penchant for production and mastery of symphonic, electronic media, and Hyperspace Cowgirls delivered an entirely new audience - kids. To face this challenge, Cummings drew from early in his career when he was one of the first teachers at Lincoln Center's Education Program. "The younger the audience," he learned, "the more honest it keeps you. You must make contact and keep contact. You can't drift into the mythological and psychological musings that opera allows." This wisdom applied well to the creation of Hyperspace Cowgirls titles such as Magic Wardrobe, Magic Princess, First Ladies, Paint 'n Play Pony, and Mary-Kate and Ashley's Dance Party of the Century, a collection of PC games that are both engaging and intelligent.

"Whether in the world of composing or interactive media you have to be a producer to make an idea happen. You need a team of talent that is greater than your own, and you need to be able to communicate your enthusiasm to everyone." Words of wisdom from our very own Chief Wrangler and premiere apostrophe boy.
