With one foot in Japan and one in the U.S., it's not surprising Yukiyo Nagata lives in Cyberspace, too! Having studied fine arts in Japan, she made her way to the States to try her hand at graphic design. She came to HC first as an intern from Queens College, and in no time has risen to become one of our lead illustrators.
Yukiyo moves freely between illustration, animation, and graphic design. Her formal training was steeped in painting and sculpture, but Yukiyo has also done her art history homework. If you're not yet convinced of her eclectic worldliness, just imagine a current U.S. citizen studying Greek and Russian Orthodox icons in Japan. "It's not the most common subject to study in Japan," she says. Her knowledge of art history provided helpful backing to our research for Magic Wardrobe. Her delightful illustrations have graced many HC products. You can even see a charming example in our Fun Zone, Thinking of You. Her most recent efforts are worn by America's First Ladies and by every girl's fantasy Paint 'n Play Pony. Though completely at home in the visual world, Yukiyo's prowess on the shamisen, a Japanese three-stringed instrument, is a rarity even in Japan. Don't mind her modesty on the matter, Yukiyo's mastery of the Kouta style of music, a kind of casual-folk music, would spin the heads of even the biggest Joan Baez fans. How does she compare life in Japan to life in New York? "I love the lifestyles in both the U.S. and Japan, but mostly I miss my 14-year old cat, Chome, who still lives in Japan." Perhaps we'll have to invent a program for cats to use email... Until then, though, Yukiyo's adopted home has suited her just fine, and her design contributions along with her cultural cosmopolitanism will continue to add verve to the Hyperspace Cowgirls lifestyle.
