hat’s right. Before coming to Hyperspace Cowgirls, Mike Horstman, Designer, Associate Producer, and Man about Town could be found lounging in photographers’ studios and strutting his stuff on the runways of high fashion. In case you never saw him in a TV commercial or a fashion magazine ad, maybe you caught a glimpse of him tending to many a swanky bar in town – utilizing acute hand–eye coordination and keen dexterity that would have put even Tom Cruise to shame. But, lucky for us here at HC, those careers proved unsatisfying for Mike.
With a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communications from the University of Delaware, Mike gained plenty of experience in the design world. It was in the realm of computer design that he found his niche. Having made his way into the NYU classroom of our very own Head Cowgirl, Susan Shaw, his talents were recognized and he began freelance work on the award–winning Magic Wardrobe. One year later Mike became a full–time staff member at HC.

Just poke around and have a good time.
Mike takes his work with children’s products very seriously. Though a CD–ROM or Web site may be geared towards children, he says, “The same amount of intensity and fervor that goes into making things for grown–ups is found in the creation of children’s products. There’s a lot of work involved in making a kids’ game both educational and fun. You can’t replace one with the other.” As
examples of HC’s success in this respect, he highlights the access to a broad range of carefully researched and fascinating historical information found in Magic Wardrobe and the opportunity for creative input in the form of original stories inspired by interaction with Paint ‘n Play Pony.

It can’t be said that computer design work has made Mike any less active. He holds in his sports palette everything from skiing to volleyballing to noble attempts at surfing (in which his chocolate lab, Kenya, is apt to join him). But far from avoiding any tacky jokes about “surfing the Web,” doning his Hawaiian shirt and running his fingers through his long hair, Mike Horstman is at home both in the Atlantic Ocean and in the hallowed halls of the HC studio.
