"We should use a dictaphone. I usually carry one in my bag." This statement characterizes Sophocles Papavasilopoulos or Steve, as he is known. As Hyperspace Cowgirls' associate producer and details man, Steve jokingly claims his name may be the only thing that distinguishes him from other people. "I get undue attention," but he likes it that way.
First generation Greek-American, (did you guess?), Steve grew up in Toledo, Ohio and like many other Ohio children, his first language was Greek. Surrounded by Greek food, culture and religion, (Steve's father is a Byzantine chanter, among other things) made Steve's childhood unusually steeped in his cultural tradition. Music was an integral part of his youth, and by the age of five, Steve was playing the piano. Soon he branched out into other instruments, including percussion, clarinet, guitar, accordion, "...and a mean pair of spoons." By college, Steve had decided to take the plunge into music at Oberlin Conservatory, where he began work on an opera titled Poohsticks, adapted from A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh stories. After spending a semester immersed in theatre in England, he began to compose, arrange, and design specifically for the theatre. Steve also actually picked up a few marketable skills (you thought this would be another sad liberal arts story?). Through his work at Oberlin, he worked with audio engineering and sound editing, and by extension, gained a broad knowledge of computer technology. Steve also tackled the role of producer when he pulled together a group of over forty performers and a production team for the premiere of his opera. Steve's broad knowledge of audio technology, computer-savvy, and production skills were part of the traits that made him so appealing to Hyperspace Cowgirls. You need a great game concept written? Or how about some stompin' music and sound FX? Well, Sophocles is definitely your man...or hygirl in this case.
